Research question
How can people interpret investment losses in ways that support learning for future decisions?
Approach
Under uncertainty, a carefully considered decision can still lead to a loss. FacingLoss investigates how people interpret these outcomes and how reflection can support learning for future decisions.
Interviews with 12 investors informed a five-stage framework of loss acceptance and a system for reconstructing experiences, considering different perspectives, and forming personal investment principles.
An exploratory study involved 12 participants and a one-week follow-up. The study had no control group; the manuscript is under review.
My contribution
Led web-system development, formative interviews, study design and execution, data analysis, and manuscript writing as first author.
This project was part of my research at Future Computing Lab, Sungkyunkwan University, advised by Prof. Sunjae Lee and in collaboration with Dr. Hyeon Jeon at Seoul National University.
Connection to my broader work
Together with the missing-evidence project, this work links interpretation before a decision with reflection afterward. It motivates my interest in the cognitive and neural mechanisms of perception and decision-making, and in computational accounts of these processes.
